Experts Highlight Need for Greater Awareness of Tobacco Harm Reduction Approaches

As countries around the world continue exploring strategies to reduce smoking rates, public health experts are increasingly emphasizing the role of tobacco harm reduction (THR) as part of broader tobacco control efforts. THR refers to the use of scientifically substantiated alternatives that may present lower risks than combustible cigarettes for adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking.

Health professionals note that while quitting smoking entirely remains the best option, many smokers struggle to quit despite repeated attempts. As a result, policymakers and public health stakeholders in several countries have begun examining harm reduction approaches alongside traditional cessation measures, with the aim of reducing smoking-related disease and mortality.

“True tobacco harm reduction starts with informed choices, credible science and practical solutions that can genuinely reduce the harms associated with smoking. The focus should remain on awareness, accessibility and supporting adult smokers in making better decisions for themselves,” said Dr. Aftab Ahmed, General Physician.

Experts maintain that effective tobacco control requires a balanced approach that combines prevention, cessation support and access to accurate information. They argue that continued public awareness and evidence-based discussions can help ensure that adult smokers are better informed about the options available to them, while supporting broader public health objectives aimed at reducing the burden of smoking-related disease.
